Researchers from Google have developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) capable of composing musical pieces for several minutes using just text. Additionally, the model, known as MusicLM, is able to transcribe melodies hummed or whistled into instruments similar to how systems like DALL-E create images from written instructions.Â
This was reported by TechCrunch and The Verge, an American technology news website. Samples of MusicLM’s creations can be found on the Google’s demo site. They are stunning; for example, 30-second musical compositions crafted from a paragraph-long description outlining a genre, feeling and specific instruments.Â
Additionally, it created 5-minute pieces based off of a single or two-word prompt, like “melodic techno.” Furthermore, 8-second snippets of a given genre, songs suited for a prison break and even the differences between a novice and experienced piano player were all produced by MusicLM. The demo also provides interpretations of phrases like “accordion death metal” and “futuristic club”.
Although MusicLM can emulate human vocals, they don’t sound entirely accurate. Nonetheless, the model can accurately capture the right tone and general sound of voices.
Despite technical limitations and lack of available training data, there had yet to be a model capable of producing musically complex and high fidelity songs. According to the report, MusicLM is likely the first of its kind to be able to achieve this feat. The model was trained on a dataset of 280,000 hours of music in order to be able to generate coherent compositions from descriptions of considerable complexity (e.g. “enchanting jazz song with a memorable saxophone solo and a solo singer” or “Berlin ’90s techno with a low bass and strong kick”), as discussed in a research paper by Cornell University in the US.
Recently, Google revealed a new security measure, enabling users to secure their Incognito sessions on Chrome for Android with biometric authentication when returning to the app. In a blog post, the tech titan shared that this added security feature is now available.
“You can require biometric authentication when you resume an Incognito session that was interrupted,” the tech giant said in a blogpost.
