AI has been the recent buzzword in consumer technology, whether mentioned at CES or more recently at Samsung Unpacked. While not new to mobile devices, it’s increasingly prevalent in daily use and can significantly impact your smartphone experience. Samsung is banking on AI to transform your smartphone experience with its latest device, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra phone.
Just announced last week, I’ve extensively tested this device, from online gaming to night photography sessions (branded Nightography by Samsung). Despite AI still having a long way to go, the S24 Ultra proves that its AI features make it one of the top mobile devices available, particularly if you’re seeking the best camera. Overall, the incremental improvements make it a compelling choice for your daily use. Continue reading to discover why.

- Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Design
- Stronger Material, Subtle Changes
For the design of the S24 Ultra, Samsung reinforced the build by upgrading to an all-new titanium frame and Corning Gorilla Armor glass display, compared to the aluminum frame of the S23 Ultra. Is titanium and this new glass compound stronger? So far, I’ve dropped the device a few times with no visible scratches or cracks—it looks as pristine as when I unboxed it.
The device is slightly thinner and lighter, making it a tad wider and shorter while still retaining the 6.8-inch display. I’m pleased that the overall look and feel of the Galaxy S series devices remain iconic. As the saying goes: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
The titanium material looks sleek and feels comfortable in hand, although the back attracts fingerprints easily. While not a deal breaker for most, those opting to use the device case-free may find it bothersome.
Samsung also upgraded the display brightness from 1,750 nits to a massive 2,600 nits, which is beneficial outdoors but may feel too bright at night. However, features like Eyecomfort Shield, Adaptive Brightness, and Dark Mode mitigate this issue. If not utilized, be prepared to squint at the screen or wear sunglasses, especially when streaming in bed on the highest brightness settings.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Performance
AI Streamlines Operations
I rigorously test any device I work with, performing various tasks from taking calls and messages to recording briefings, taking notes, and gaming—all while multitasking. The Samsung S24 Ultra impressively handles my daily routine, thanks to several standout AI-based features.
Many features crucial to my daily use have received AI-based enhancements. When taking notes, I can now jot them down in any manner I choose, and AI enhances the overall experience by straightening slanted script or summarizing lengthy notes in seconds. Moreover, AI-powered Circle To Search revolutionizes image-based searches, providing search results in seconds by circling items of interest on-screen.
Circle To Search proved particularly useful during my tests, accurately identifying items like my favorite Teva Amaya boots and various other products within seconds. This powerful tool, though currently exclusive to Samsung, will be available on other devices shortly, courtesy of Google.
For current S23 Ultra or foldable phone users considering an upgrade, the S24 Ultra may not justify the switch immediately. However, AI features will eventually roll out to previous models. The primary reason for upgrading would be the camera enhancements, but more on that later. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Verdict
For those already using the S23 Ultra or one of Samsung’s foldable phones and considering upgrading: The S24 Ultra probably isn’t worth the upgrade, at least right now. These AI features will be rolling out to the S23 series, the Fold 5, and the Flip 5 sometime in the future, per some briefings I participated in. The only reason to upgrade is the camera, but more on that later.
Welcoming the Samsung AI Revolution
With AI rapidly reshaping the tech landscape, it’s gratifying to see AI focused on content creation, capturing moments, and optimizing on-the-go gameplay. The Samsung S24 Ultra seamlessly integrates AI, a robust processor, and ample RAM to deliver exceptional performance. Whether considering transitioning to the Samsung ecosystem or upgrading from earlier models, the S24 Ultra, starting at $1,299, is a worthwhile investment.
Those seeking superior night shots or advanced imaging adjustments with AI will find the S24 Ultra particularly appealing. Its camera lens set excels in low-light conditions, making it ideal for capturing everything from concerts to late-night stargazing.
Testing Methodology
Upon receiving the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, I extensively tested its capabilities. In California, I conducted head-to-head comparisons with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, assessing daytime and nighttime shots. Additionally, I evaluated the Circle To Search feature around San Jose, searching for various items.

The seamless integration of AI into various aspects of daily use, coupled with robust hardware, positions it as a top-tier mobile device. Whether you’re a part of the Samsung family or considering the switch, the S24 Ultra offers a compelling package, albeit with a slightly higher price tag.
The device’s exceptional camera capabilities, especially in low-light conditions, make it a valuable choice for photography enthusiasts. The AI enhancements, such as Circle To Search, add a layer of convenience to everyday tasks.
