Some artists chase trends. Others build timeless work. From the heart of the DMV, JustRuss and Rasta Tahj are proving they belong to the latter camp—two creators who take sound seriously and treat every project like legacy in the making.
The Precision of JustRuss
For more than ten years, JustRuss (AyoRuss) has been developing his own sonic fingerprint. His music fuses trap’s rawness with the emotional depth of R&B, the bounce of pop, and the narrative weight of hip hop. The influence of his early church days and Virginia Beach’s rhythmic culture adds a spiritual depth that sets him apart.
Russ’s process is methodical but alive with creativity. He thrives not just on making beats, but on designing an entire listening experience.
“I love when I can shape a full vision,” he said. “From intros to outros, to how one song flows into the next—it’s all about matching the energy the artist wants to convey. When they bring me a sample or a vibe and I can make it real, that’s the best feeling.”
On Roster for Life, Volume Two, his touch can be felt in the transitions and textures that make the album cohesive. His beats don’t just carry rhythm—they build worlds.
The Vision of Rasta Tahj
Where Russ perfects flow, Rasta Tahj drives the vision. A lyricist, producer, and master-level engineer, Tahj is as comfortable behind the mic as he is behind the console. His music blends grit with spirit, street perspective with cinematic scale, each layer meticulously designed.
With Roster for Life, Volume Two, Tahj marks a turning point. Inspired by a summer of personal growth and a creative stint writing alongside Kanye West, the album stands as a testament to discipline and ambition.
“This project is like an update for my fans,” Tahj said. “Working with Kanye, seeing my family’s pride—it pushed me to inspire others through my music. I want people to wake up, hit play, and feel ready to go chase something.”
Recorded in just a few months, the 11-track album was cut down from more than 60 songs. Produced in part by Tahj himself alongside JustRuss, Forrest Gibbons, and other DMV standouts, it also features heavyweights like Kanye’s longtime friend Really Doe and lyricist Dave Thoughts.
Two Sides of the Same Standard
Individually, Rasta Tahj and JustRuss have carved strong reputations in their fields—Tahj as a boundary-pushing engineer and songwriter, Russ as a detail-driven producer with emotional range. Together, they raise the bar.
Their work is proof that East Coast artistry doesn’t have to choose between underground grit and mainstream polish—it can embody both. By combining vision with precision, they’re crafting a sound built not just for now, but for the future.
